Integrating basic skills into occupational training courses is a model that has shown striking results in Washington State (under the Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training, or I-BEST, program), and is being implemented elsewhere around the country. In Minnesota, this model is being promoted and supported through the FastTRAC (Training, Resources, and Credentialing) initiative. In this model, the ABE instructor and occupational skills instructor coordinate around course curriculum and lesson planning with the goal of teaching students basic skills that are contextualized to the career or industry they are preparing for. Under I-BEST-type programming, ABE instructors "bookend" the occupational skills training, spending time prior to class previewing basic skills related to the day's lesson and time after reviewing material with students and answering questions. In some cases, ABE instructors may work alongside students for all or a portion of the occupational lesson.
