Making Connections
 A key to helping learners and workers transition between adult basic education (ABE), higher education, and workforce development services is to create bridges that are easily accessible within the organizations that currently serve them -- in other words, building on existing traffic patterns. 

 

Our efforts to build these bridges across the three arenas can be guided by research and practice undertaken in Minnesota and elsewhere around the country. We categorize this research and practice into three broad (and often overlapping) approaches or pathways:

1. "Traditional" progression from ABE to a GED and then a two- or four-year degree.

 

2. Education and training within an industry or occupational cluster along a career pathway.

 

3. An infrastructure of support that helps smooth transitions from one arena to another, and helps students/workers overcome barriers to success.
